THE BEGINNING

Hereford Pegasus began when Noel Watkin’s successful Herefordshire County Boys side asked to remain together after the county season ended. After winning 10 of 17 matches and building an exceptional team bond, Pegasus Juniors was born.

EARLY SUCCESS & REPUTATION

Named by Ted Woodriffe after the famous Pegasus amateur side, the club quickly earned a reputation for outstanding sportsmanship, famously receiving no yellow or red cards. Pegasus travelled across Europe, playing top opposition including Belgian sides such as Royal FC Bruges.

The club attracted attention from well-known public figures including Norman Wisdom, Frankie Vaughan and Petula Clark, all of whom became Vice Presidents. Pegasus became recognised not just for footballing success, but for community spirit and unity.

HELLENIC LEAGUE ENTRY

Original members Jack Perks and Bob Pasley helped Pegasus secure membership in the Hellenic League and establish a clubhouse in Hereford, marking a major milestone in the club’s growth.

NEW GROUND OPENS

Pegasus opened its new home thanks to funding from the Football Foundation, The FA, local trusts and club directors. The site included a floodlit main pitch plus junior and mini football facilities.

2010 — League Transition Decision
The club decided to leave the Hellenic League due to increasing travel demands and prepare for a move to the West Midlands League for the 2011/12 season.

2011/12 — New League Era Begins
Pegasus entered the West Midlands League and completed a season of consolidation as the club adapted to new competition and challenges.

2012/13 — Strong Progress
A much-improved campaign saw Pegasus finish 7th, showing clear progression and establishing a strong foundation for future success.

2013/14 — Promotion Push
Under manager Chris Hyde, Pegasus finished 2nd, missing out on the title by just one point. The team scored 127 goals and impressed with a strong defence.

MAJOR FACILITY INVESTMENT

Off the pitch, £180,000 of grant funding helped improve the clubhouse and ground, strengthening infrastructure for players and supporters.

HEREFORD PEGASUS FC

The key to any successful youth structure is the coaches/managers who look after the young players who join the club. It is their dedication to the youngsters and ensuring the environment they train and play in is fun, enjoyable, structured and rewarding that produces the happy, smiling faces that turn out at weekends at Old School lane and around the county. At Pegasus F.C we support our coaches to the maximum to instil in them the need for young players to enjoy and be happy when taking part. It is our core value. Of course, it is great to win trophies, leagues, tournaments and simply matches but never at the expense of a simple team being together and relaxed and enjoying every minute of the experience of playing in their respective age groups.

All our youth coaches and managers are minimum level 1 (Junior badge) accredited together with first aid qualification and CRB checking all done and renewed in accordance with FA standards. Pegasus Football itself is a FA Charter Standard Accredited club. The time devoted to simply achieving these qualifications is an indication of the dedication of all our club coaches. They are the single most valuable asset the club possess.

Monthly managers meeting are held to ensure the youth section is functioning correctly. It gives an opportunity to put forward ideas, share stories and air any problems that have arisen. It is also a great time to support managers who may be experiencing difficulties with players, parents or simply having a tough time. It’s nice to know you have your fellow coaches support on a cold, wet winters training night!

Our managers are always on hand to talk to any youngster wishing to join the club via email or phone. Initial contact can be made via the clubs website and email address from where it will directed to appropriate age group coach concerned.

Established in 1955, Hereford Pegasus FC has a proud history spanning generations. From its beginnings as a county youth side to a thriving community club, Pegasus continues to develop players, inspire communities and uphold its founding values.

At Hereford Pegasus FC, youth development is about far more than football. We believe the best environment for young players is one that is fun, supportive, structured and rewarding. Creating happy, confident players who enjoy every session is at the heart of everything we do. While winning trophies, leagues and tournaments is always exciting, success should never come at the expense of enjoyment. Our core belief is simple — young players should love being part of their team and enjoy every moment of their football journey.
The foundation of any successful youth setup is its coaches and managers. Their commitment, passion and dedication are what help create the positive experiences seen every weekend at Old School Lane and across Herefordshire. Every youth coach and manager at Pegasus holds a minimum FA Level 1 qualification (or Junior Badge), alongside first aid certification and enhanced DBS checks, all maintained in line with FA standards. As an FA Charter Standard Accredited club, we take safeguarding, coaching quality and player wellbeing seriously.
We believe great coaches need great support. Regular monthly managers’ meetings ensure our youth section continues to operate effectively, while also giving coaches the opportunity to share ideas, celebrate successes and discuss challenges. These sessions create a strong support network where coaches can help one another through the realities of grassroots football — whether that involves players, parents or simply difficult winter training sessions.
